Each of these hair transplant procedures have their own pros and cons and should be looked at carefully before making your decision.

Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant

This type of procedure is also referred to as a ‘FUE’ hair transplant and involve the use of hair that you already have. When you go in for your transplant, the doctor will use a small extraction tool to remove follicles from hair that you have not lost (donor areas) and are then transplanted into the follicles where hair has been lost. This might sound as though it is extremely painful, but, generally, it is not that painful. Any surgical procedure will have a little bit of pain that goes along with it, but recent advancements in tools and extraction procedures makes any pain experienced at a low minimum, compared with other hair transplant procedures.

This type of procedure has become a little more popular as of late because, generally, it is not as invasive as many other types of hair transplants. Also, the recovery period after a Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant is dramatically shorter than any other type of hair transplanting procedure. Another advantage to FUE is that any scars and scarring that would normally appear in other types of procedures are minimal, if at all.
Standard Strip Procedure

Unlike the Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant method, a Standard Strip Procedure, also known as follicular unit grafting, uses patches of hair to transplant instead of one follicle at a time. The area of hair to be transplanted is then grafted onto the scalp with sutures to close it. Generally, these closing sutures can be either staples or stitches and typically you will have them removed about less than two weeks after the initial surgery has been completed. Sometimes special type of stitches that can dissolve can be used on the sutures as well.

This remains to be the most popular method of transplanting hair mostly because it can be half the price of a full FUE procedure. This type of transplant also allows for larger areas of hair and grafts to be moved and more balding space can be covered per session of the transplant surgery.
